Fernando Torres

Fernando José Torres Sanz (born March 20, 1984) is a Spanish football player. He was born in the Fuenlabrada neighbourhood of Madrid and was the youngest player to play for Atlético Madrid and the youngest to become captain (at age 19). Nicknamed 'El Niño' (The Kid) for his youthful face, Torres is a striker for Spain and Liverpool.

Torres scored 75 goals over 5 seasons in the Spanish top flight, with only Samuel Eto'o and David Villa scoring more in the same period. Torres also played two seasons in the second division where he scored 7 goals in 40 games.

*Will he be any good? Could he be the missing link? All these questions will be answered over the following months. According to Torres he thinks he can do what Fernando Morientes failed to do and develop into one of Liverpool's finest strikers. Morientes flopped out in the English Premier league as do so many spanish league players. Torres brings quickness, youth and most importantly goal scoring ability to the Liverpool line up which recently lost to Milan in the Champions League Final.

Torres has recently been revealed as Liverpool's most expensive signing in its 115 year history. Unlike Morientes who failed to adapt to the physicality's of EPL Torres believes it wont be a problem for him. Liverpool is "historically the most successful club in the history if English Football" due the club winning more competitions than any other club. The mentality of winning is bred into Liverpool players and in particular the number 9 shirt worn by club greats such as Robbie Fowler.

Torres has played for Atletico Marid in the Spanish league where he is the third highest scorer behind Eto over the past 5 seasons. Torres signed a 6 year, $212,000 a week contract which cost Liverpool a $52 millon transfer fee. Torres will have a chance to prove him self worthy in August when English Football resumes.
